Zinc Coating: During the galvanization process, the metal wire or the welded mesh are dipped into a bath of molten zinc or otherwise coated with zinc. The zinc attaches to the wire's surface, forming a protective covering.
Sacrificial Protection: Because zinc is more reactive than steel, a process called sacrificial protection occurs when galvanized welded wire mesh is exposed to moisture or corrosive substances. When corrosive elements such as water or oxygen are present, the zinc layer corrodes in preference to the underlying steel. Due to this sacrificial action, the zinc layer protects the steel from corrosion.

In addition to sacrificial protection, the zinc coating acts as a physical barrier between the steel and the outside environment. This barrier prevents moisture, oxygen, and other corrosive elements from directly reaching the steel surface, further improving the welded wire mesh's corrosion resistance.
Self-Healing: If the zinc coating becomes scratched or damaged, it can self-heal through a process known as cathodic reformation. The zinc in the surrounding areas will naturally flow and cover the exposed steel, keeping the protective barrier in place and preventing corrosion from spreading.
