Barbed wire can be recognized by its sharp metal barbs and is commonly used to construct low-cost fences. Barbed wire is normally made up of two strands coated with zinc or PVC. Both strands are twisted together, and barbs--sharp metal projections--are inserted between the intervals to create a wire that is extremely difficult to leap over. It may be placed on top of fences or set down as a nice barrier.

Michael Kelly had invented the basic design for barbed wire when he twisted two wires together to create a barbed wire.
1874
DEVELOPE
Joseph Glidden, a farmer from De Kalb, Illinois, improved Kelly's idea by locking a basic wire barb into a double-strand wire, for which he was granted a patent by the United States government.
1877
IOWA BARBED WIRE
It was patented by Arthur S. Burnell of Marshall, Iowa, on June 19, 1877.
1888
SINGLE STRAND BARBED WIRE
It was patented by Charles D. Rogers on January 10, 1888
1908
MOTTO BARBED WIRE
It was patented by Alva Kisserman of Muncie, Indiana, on September 29, 1908.
